“Madame Clicquot,” a film directed by Thomas K. Napper about one of the first entrepreneurs in the wine business, the Napoleonic embargoes and true triumph, will be released in Russia. We were among the first to see the film (screenings in cinemas begin on July 18) and we tell you five reasons why you shouldn’t miss it.

Based on real facts

The action takes place in France at the beginning of the 19th century. The main character of the film is Barbe-Nicole Clicquot (Haley Bennett), who was widowed at the age of 27. After the death of her husband, she had to take the reins of the family business into her own hands and demonstrate strength of character and perseverance – a real challenge at that time. Women were not allowed to have their own bank accounts, but they were required to have a kind character and live in the shadow of their husbands; rules of conduct were also enshrined in the Napoleonic Code (French Civil Code – BURO). Barbe-Nicole Clicquot not only managed to keep the family business afloat, but also made her own name a cult object among wine lovers and connoisseurs.

Champagne and a prophetic wedding gift

In June 1798, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (Haley Bennett) and François-Marie Clicquot (Tom Sturridge) were married. The priest gave the newlyweds, as well as the owners of vineyards in Buzy and a small wine company founded in 1772, a book on the methods of sparkling wine production used since the early 17th century. After her husband’s death, at the height of the Napoleonic Wars, Veuve Clicquot perfected the art of remake, or ripping. The bottles were placed at an angle on special racks. For six to eight weeks they were rotated a quarter turn each day, which helped remove sediment, and then liqueur was added to the drink during production. The technology was called “remuage”; with minor changes, this method is still used in Champagne production today.

Woman in a man’s business

and copyright litigation

Following Napoleon’s defeat, the Congress of Vienna was convened to decide on the new borders of Europe. Negotiations began in September 1814 and continued until June 1815. During this time, the popularity of champagne as the main drink for celebrations increased, and at the same time, cases of counterfeiting became more frequent. Madame Clicquot was one of the first to openly sue the fraudsters, while continuing to introduce innovations in production. Initially there were no labels on the bottles, but in 1798 the corks began to be marked with a brand anchor and a green wax seal was added. In February 1877, the company registered the yellow label as a trademark; this was one of the first legal cases of copyright confirmation in the wine industry.

Direction and script

The film was produced by Cyrano Joe Wright, whose credits include Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina, Atonement and the recently released Cyrano, which also starred Bennett, with Thomas Napper in the lead. Erin Dignam and Christopher Monger were responsible for the script; the film was based on the biography of a winemaker: “Veuve Clicquot” by Tilar J. Mazzeo. According to critics, the team managed not only to reproduce the atmosphere of the years in which the events took place, but also to objectively tell the story of one of the first public businesswomen.

The legacy of Barbé-Nicole Clicquot

Today, Veuve Clicquot champagne is recognised as legendary and is a standard-bearer for other wine companies around the world. In addition, the Champagne house is credited with the status of creators of the first rosé champagne in 1775: unlike other producers who coloured their drinks with elderberry juice, the widow added red wine from pinot noir grapes to the collection. In 1986, the house was bought by Louis Vuitton (now LVMH).
