French President Emmanuel Macron, after holding a series of consultations with the country’s main political forces, has appointed Michel Barnier, who previously served as European Commissioner and EU Brexit negotiator, to the post of Prime Minister of France.
How did Michel Barnier get appointed as the new Prime Minister of France?
As reported by the LCI television channel, one of the most important criteria for Macron was the conclusion of an agreement with the main political forces to avoid a vote of no confidence in the new cabinet. Despite this, the deputies of the leftist alliance New Popular Front still retain the ability to block the candidacy of any new prime minister.
It is worth noting that the last French election was won by the coalition of left-wing parties “New Popular Front”, which won 182 seats in the National Assembly. At the same time, Macron’s Together alliance was able to win only 168 seats. The far-right party National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, came third with 143 seats.
