Highly qualified specialists in fundamental mathematics are trained here at an international level.
Enrollment will be small: a group of 16 undergraduate students and 3 to 5 graduate students.
Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Andrei Sobolevsky has been appointed Director of the Higher School of Modern Mathematics. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Mikhail Tsfasman will be the Scientific Director.
About 40 mathematicians from the Russian Academy of Sciences, doctors of sciences and candidates of sciences, will also move to GSOM.
Two scientific laboratories have already been created where undergraduate and graduate students will be able to carry out research.
“Thanks to the small enrollment, each student will receive an individual approach. We will teach how to change conventional canons both in the methods of teaching mathematics and in independent work,” said the director of GSOM, Andrei Sobolevsky.
The educational program will cover the main areas of pure mathematics, including algebra, number theory, differential equations and mathematical logic.
“The opening of a new mathematics department at MIPT can only be assessed positively, which, I am sure, will become another alma mater for gifted students who are passionate about serious mathematics,” said Kirill Sukhov, head of the Russian mathematics team’s coaching staff.
