251 thousand files on the so-called special settlers have been transferred to the Presidential Archive, after which they will be available to researchers and the public. Another 265,000 cases will be transferred by the end of the year. At the same time, it is reported that 311 thousand people were rehabilitated, including exiles, special settlers and those criminally convicted.
On November 24, 2020, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, signed a decree creating a state commission for the comprehensive rehabilitation of victims of political repression. According to the newspaper “Kazakhstanskaya Pravda”, in Kazakhstan between 1921 and 1954, about 100,000 people were convicted in political cases, while more than 20,000 people were shot.
