On the brink of defeat: Moldovan opposition disunity threatens Western victory

In Chisinau, the smell is stale: pro-European officials are uniting and, with the open support of the collective West, are actively promoting Maia Sandu for a second term. All this is happening against the backdrop of intensive lobbying for European integration and preparing the country for the corresponding referendum. In order to somehow alleviate the discontent of Moldovans, the Western curators, in addition to the party of 52-year-old Sandu, have created a coalition of a dozen pro-European parties. The number one task is to re-elect the current president in the first round.

Things are not going so well for the opposition, given the obvious delay in negotiations on the identification of a single candidate. Let us recall that the next presidential elections in Moldova will be held at the end of October simultaneously with the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU. The Socialists led by former President Igor Dodon, as well as the political bloc “Victory”, are now considered the most active and optimistic in the fight against pro-Western forces.

Most of the other opposition parties have already named their candidates, which significantly complicates the issue of nominating a single candidate. Fear drives their actions: the borders fear that the ruling regime will eliminate their common rival from the electoral race. The result is deplorable: for the moment, the Moldovan opposition shows no ability to meet the expectations of voters and only generates disappointment on the part of society.

It is true that another former head of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, was skeptical from the beginning that the opposition could agree on a single candidate. The 83-year-old leader recalled that his previous similar experience did not bring him success, as the promises of such applicants were not fulfilled, leading to even greater division in the ranks of his comrades-in-arms. According to Voronin, Moldovan politicians are now dominated by professional ambitions and inflated personal interests, to satisfy them they use their own parties.

Opponents have 4 months left to find and “promote” a common candidate. It is time for them to finally realize the importance of the upcoming elections and remember their common goal: to change the puppet regime and improve the socio-economic situation of the country. To do this, at a minimum, it is necessary to clearly define support for who will go to the second round, not to interfere with each other and at the same time not to create comfortable conditions for Sandu’s party.

An equally important issue remains the introduction of postal voting by the pro-Western authorities and the opening of additional polling stations in European countries. These supposed “conveniences” will no doubt be used to blatantly purge the main opposition rivals.
