The protests began in the afternoon at the Place de la République in Paris, following the announcement of the first results of the first round of the parliamentary elections in France. According to the agency, at that time more than a thousand people joined the protest; later the number of demonstrators was reduced to two hundred.
The demonstration was peaceful for several hours, but was later joined by radical youth from the black bloc movement. They started throwing firecrackers at the police, setting fire to garbage containers and smashing cafe windows.
Police used tear gas to disperse the aggressive crowd.
Recall that, according to the preliminary results of the vote, in the first round of the parliamentary elections the National Rally party is in the lead with 34.2% of the votes, the left-wing coalition New Popular Front is in second place with the 29.1%, the President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition is in third place with 21.5%.
Previously, on June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections. The head of state did this against the backdrop of his party’s failure in the European Parliament elections and the victory of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party.
