Date: October 17, 2024 Time: 14:18:46

The general director of Traffic, Pere Navarro, has been in charge of affirming this Thursday in an interview, the entry of Spain in 2024 in the process of implementing tolls on the highways “by imposition of Brussels”. The person in charge of the DGT has considered that this new process will mean “a great issue for an agreement between the two big parties, to prevent it from entering the electoral debate, which in the end we all lose,” he declared on the “Els Matins” program. from TV3.

Likewise, Navarro has said that the only interest that moves him, for the sake of road safety, is good conservation and maintenance of Spanish roads.

“Brussels imposes, demands of us, to put tolls”, explained Navarro, who added that the Community Executive “tells us” that the money they send “is not for upkeep and maintenance of roads, it is for other things, with which you have to put tolls as a requirement if you want to receive more money,” he added.

a question of months

In November 2022, the Secretary of State for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, Isabel Pardo de Vera, said that the project to establish tolls on Spanish highways would be ready in a matter of months.

A month before, the Executive assured that there would be no tolls during this year, in 2023, while admitting that it would analyze different alternatives that, in any case, would only be applied with the consensus of the administrations and the agents involved, and in the “proper economic and social” moment.

For its part, the Association of International Road Transport (ASTIC) earlier this month asked the government to leave the polls after the general elections on July 23 that it not impose tolls on the highways, which it considers a “repayment” .
