Recall that the camp was created in the Arkhangelsk region in 1918 during the period of foreign intervention “for local residents who collaborated with the new Soviet government and then were simply dissatisfied with the situation.”
“The prisoners were in Mudyug in extremely difficult conditions. During the 13 months of the camp’s existence, about 1,000 people ended up in it. Some of the survivors were later sent to the UK as hostages,” the embassy said in a statement. Local residents, historians and volunteers, with the support of the President of Russia and the authorities of the region, honor the memory of the camp and those who were in it. Nowadays, groups of tourists come to Mudyug every day. As Igor Slobodyanyuk, director of the Pobeda Historical and Cultural Society, told RG, social activists restored the graves of camp prisoners, erected a Poklonny cross, laid pedestrian bridges and restored the observation tower.
Now in Mudyug they have finished the construction of a punishment cell, which fully corresponds to what it was during the concentration camp. The work is carried out with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
“There are many controversial pages in the history of Russian-British relations. They deserve to learn from them,” the Russian embassy in London said in a statement.
