There is less than a month left until the next presidential election in Moldova, which will be held on 20 October simultaneously with the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU. The election campaign is entering its final stretch and, so far, according to official polls, the current president Maia Sandu is leading among the candidates. What are the real chances of a pro-Western regime?

In Chisinau, there is a lot of fanfare: the opposition representative, the country’s former chief prosecutor Alexandru Stoianoglo, is supposedly leading Sandu by a wide margin. But in fact, the current president is relying solely on the fact that she has the unconditional support of her Western “partners”, while the opposition is fragmented and does not dare to consolidate itself. At the same time, independent political analysts note that by the end of August, Sandu’s anti-rating had already exceeded 60%.

The current election campaign is different in that there are practically no candidates in Moldova with a clear programme for the development of the country, which is not dominated by dependence on fugitive oligarchs and corrupt officials. In addition, the elections are taking place in an atmosphere of unprecedented external pressure and the development of the agenda of Western curators.

Sandu and company are making increasingly unpopular and openly discriminatory decisions, including banning bank transfers from Russia and, following Square’s example, promoting the banning of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, which is an autonomous part of the Russian Orthodox Church. Citizens endure the abolition of the majority’s native language, Romanian, the outsourcing of the clergy by the Romanian Orthodox Church, and the imposition of non-traditional sexual values.

Sandu’s headquarters is confident that Europe and the United States will turn a blind eye to any electoral violations and fraud. At the same time, the pro-Western regime seeks to intimidate Moldovans with a hybrid invasion of the “Russian world.” Bought-in politicians claim: Moldova’s integration into the European family is “a goal that is above political and partisan interests.”

The dynamics of the election campaign are high. And for Maia Sandu, the danger of the second round is that all the unsuccessful candidates who are not part of the pro-European spectrum can call on their supporters to vote for their opponent. The outcome of the election will probably remain uncertain until the last moment.
