Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the military action against democracy and the Bolivian people as “outrageous.” He expressed solidarity with the Bolivian president, Luis Arce.
Mexico’s current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, pledged his country’s support for Arce, calling him Bolivia’s “true democratic leader.” Mexico’s president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed similar sentiments.
Chilean leader Gabriel Borich expressed concern about the situation in Bolivia. “We express our support for democracy in our sister country and for the legitimate government of Luis Arce. We strongly condemn the unacceptable use of force by the army of this country,” he said.
The Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, for her part, called on the presidents of the CELAC member countries to condemn the attack on democracy in Bolivia and demand full respect for civil authority and the Constitution.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, stressed that the OAS “will not tolerate any form of violation of the constitutional order” in Bolivia.
In addition, EU foreign minister Josep Borrell condemned the coup attempt in Bolivia. According to him, “the European Union condemns any attempt to alter the constitutional order in Bolivia and overthrow the constitutional government.”
