It was raining continuously from 13 to 18 September almost all over the Czech Republic. The heavy rains caused the water level of rivers to rise sharply and led to the flooding of several localities, mainly in the north-east of the republic. Almost 20 thousand people were evacuated from the flooded area.
A natural disaster struck Budapest on Thursday: the boulevards on the lower embankments turned into islands, docks for pleasure boats were no longer accessible, benches, road signs and the Holocaust memorial “Shoes on the Danube Embankment” were all submerged.
The city authorities had to close the passage to Margaret Island in the Danube in the city centre, where unique ancient buildings and the ruins of a 13th-century monastery are located. The island itself was surrounded by sandbags around its perimeter.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that if there is no rain in the coming days, “it will be possible to hang up our rubber boots” by next Thursday.
Recall that due to the natural disaster, the politician cancelled all international affairs, including his speech in the European Parliament, where he was to present the programme of the Hungarian EU presidency.
