Months before the Christmas Lottery draw you can find the tenths for sale. It was on July 12 when its sale began with the fear of many participants that the promise to modify its price would be fulfilled. However, the president of SELAE (Sociedad Estatal de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado) has decided to give joy to all bettors by maintaining its price in 2023.
Jesús Huerta, president of SELAE, has communicated that this year the price of the tickets of the Christmas Lottery will continue to be the same as to date. 185 million tickets and 185 series of 100,000 numbers each have already been put up for sale, which represents an increase compared to those distributed in 2022. Of the 3,700 million euros raised, a total of 70% will be distributed in prizes or what is the same, 2,590 million euros.
The fear that the price of the tickets of the Christmas Lottery would go up hovered over the participants since Huertas explained in 2002 that the price of the draw had to go up “at some point”. He assured then that “in the last 22 years the only thing that has not risen has been the price of the Lottery, it may be the only thing, I don’t know if there is any other example, not only of the Christmas Lottery, but of the Primitiva ,etc”. He claimed that he had even considered the increase with the points of sale. “We have considered the possibility of making a rise, even if it was testimonial, but in the end we have tried not to further tax the possibilities of society, although at some point it will have to go up,” he insisted then.
The price of the tenth of the Christmas lottery
The last time the price of the Christmas Lottery tenths was modified was in 2002, when it went from 18 to the current 20 euros. Since then, the amount has remained unchanged, being the longest period of time that there has been no increase.
In 1966, the year in which the raffle was born, the price of the tenths was 500 pesetas (currently 3 euros). Only one year later the amount is doubled to 1,000 pesetas (6 euros). After a decade of stability, a new price increase was undertaken in 1977, once again doubling its value to 2,000 pesetas (12 euros).
Bordering the decade of the 90 in 1989 Before the arrival of the euro, the tenths would once again have a rise in their import reaching 3,000 pesetas (18 euros).
The arrival of the new currency caused the last price increase in the history of the Christmas Lottery to date. It was in the year 2001 when the 20 euros per tenth was produced and, two decades later, its value continues to be frozen at least until Christmas 2023. We will see if this announced and feared price increase is undertaken next year.
