“I thought the driver was trying to avoid a collision, that is, I understood that an emergency situation had occurred, but I did not yet feel the magnitude,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
When the train stopped, he came out into the corridor and the passengers also jumped out from there. Omelchenko asked them about their well-being and asked them to calm down. After that, I went out to the lobby and saw several cars lying on their sides. A colleague arrived on time and explained what had happened.
“For the first two seconds you don’t realize that something like this can happen with so much power,” the guide said.
He added that at that very moment the team began to evacuate people from the overturned carriages. At the same time, the train staff provided them with first aid: some bandaged them, others put splints on them, and others simply calmed them down. Omelchenko explained that employees are taught how to act in emergency situations and he was prepared for such a scenario.
Let us remember that the accident occurred on the afternoon of June 26 on the Inta-1 – Ugolny section. Nine of the 14 passenger train cars derailed. As a result of the emergency, about 70 people were injured and three died.
The cause of the derailment of the rolling stock in the UK was said to be erosion of the railway track. A criminal case was opened over the accident.
A farewell ceremony for the victims was held in Inta on Saturday.
