Directed and co-written by Oscar nominee RaMell Ross, the screenplay is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead. The writer served as co-producer of the film.
Previously, another novel by the author became the basis for the Underground Railroad series. The show premiered in 2021 and won the Golden Globe in the Best Miniseries category.
