Initially, military pensions were planned to be raised by 4.5%, but an adjustment was necessary due to rising inflation. The necessary funds have been allocated for this purpose – 2.7 billion rubles, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told deputies. According to him, after the increase, the average military pension in Russia will be about 41.6 thousand rubles.
The procedure for calculating military pensions differs from the rules for providing pensions to ordinary citizens (not to security forces). It depends on salaries by position and rank, length of service and allowances. In this case, a reduction factor is used: from October 2024, according to the new law, it will be 89.83%, and not 89.32%, as previously assumed.
As explained by the head of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov, retired military personnel, speaking of colonels, receive 60-70 thousand rubles. The figure may vary depending on the place of service, other nuances and military profession. A lieutenant colonel receives 50-60 thousand rubles, a major – 40-50 thousand rubles.
“There is a system of additional benefits that military personnel receive during their service for performing special duties. This also affects the amount of their pension,” the MP noted. At the same time, the amount of the military personnel’s pension increases from year to year due to the increase in the coefficient. If this were not the case, the coefficient would be 78 percent today.
“Adjusting pensions for retired military personnel is an important step towards improving social support for people who have dedicated their lives to serving the state. This increase will affect about 3 million people,” commented Nikita Chaplin (United Russia faction), member of the State Duma Committee on Budget and Taxes. – Retired military personnel often face challenges after retirement, including health problems caused by their service duties. Increasing pensions not only improves their financial situation, but is also a recognition of their merits and contribution to the country’s security.”
Sergei Altukhov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, added that today the issues of security of citizens of our country come to the fore. “And, of course, we must pay special attention to the well-being of our military specialists who have retired, but who continue to do great work in training military personnel and patriotic education of youth,” he believes. – The guys who have retired are the personnel of our country, capable of providing a strong rear in the civilian world. Supporting them is an absolute priority of state policy.”
In turn, the first deputy chairman of the Defense Committee, Alexei Zhuravlev (Rodina Party), noted that the size of pensions is being increased so that “they cover inflation, but ideally, of course, military pensions should be paid at 100 percent.” “We will work on this, especially since, as far as I understand, the government is now acting in the same direction under the leadership of the Russian president,” he said.
