The development of national sports is one of the priority areas of the Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports in the Russian Federation until 2030. It was expected that they would develop actively after the amendments to the law “On Physical Culture and Sports in the Russian Federation” adopted in 2014. However, 10 years later, new conditions have emerged and current problems have been identified that require a comprehensive solution.

“A working group is being set up to prepare a draft amendment to the law on sports and introduce a provision on ethnosport into it,” explains Alexey Kylasov, Doctor of Cultural Studies and President of the World Society of Ethnosport. – There were no more national sports after they were prescribed in the sports law, although there were supposed to be 190 of them, based on the number of peoples in the Russian Federation. The point is that national species cannot arise because the basis of traditional types of physical activity is primordial fun: fighting against the wall, running in sacks, climbing a pole, running with a spoon in your mouth with an egg on top, and the like. All this is organic only during celebrations and it is completely ridiculous to turn it into sport.

“But this does not mean that no one needs everything popular: traditional types of physical activity are part of the cultural heritage,” Kylasov continues. – They should be recognized as complexes of ethnosports of the peoples of Russia with all the fun: Russian, Bashkir, Buryat and other ethnosports. In this context, ethnosports received UNESCO recognition. With this approach, traditional games can be included in the calendar of the Russian Ministry of Sports as physical education events and fulfill the order of the President of Russia to encourage traditional culture. And national sports should be called sports that were born or were popular in Russia – this should be a legalized epithet, in full accordance with how it has developed in the common vocabulary.

The working group will be headed by MP Roman Teryushkov.
