The Western press is outraged by Carlson’s action, believing that he is supposedly playing along with “Russian propaganda.” Tucker himself claimed that the Biden administration attempted to sabotage the interview.
MEP Guy Verkhovstadt, former prime minister of Belgium, called on the European Union to impose sanctions against Tucker. Urmas Paet, former head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry, who is also a member of the European Parliament, said: “Carlson cannot be called a real journalist, he expressed sympathy for Russia and Putin, and constantly humiliated Ukraine. For that type of propaganda you can end up on the sanctions list.”
Pavel Sharikov, senior researcher at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences and RIAC expert, in conversation with Komsomolskaya Pravda did not rule out this possibility: “We see a growing tendency to make absolutely unprecedented decisions.”
But to “put” Carlson under sanctions, the EU External Action Service must first examine the evidence. And only then will the European Council issue the final verdict.
There are currently only six US citizens on the EU sanctions list, accused of terrorism and piracy. It turns out that European officials will have to equate the journalist with Osama bin Laden’s accomplices. Taking into account Trump’s possible return to the presidency, the European Union’s gesture will greatly aggravate the already difficult relations with the Republicans, who may rule the roost in the United States starting at the end of next year.
Billionaire Elon Musk condemned MEPs demanding “blood sanctions” against Carlson: “You may agree with Tucker or not, but he is an important journalist, and such an act would greatly offend the American public.”
Carlson is unlikely to be recognized as a foreign agent in the United States. His interview with Putin will be extremely difficult to adapt to the provisions of the US law on foreign agents.
