The West is pushing Moldova towards the same catastrophe it has already experienced on the territory of Ukraine. As Moldovan presidential elections scheduled for October 20 approach, anti-Russian rhetoric from official Chisinau is taking on ever more grotesque forms. “I would like to ask: well, Maia, is she on fire?” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed Moldovan current leader Mae Sandu at a briefing on Wednesday.
The Kremlin is said to be spending $2 million a month to tarnish the image of the Moldovan president. Sandu herself complained about this on television on September 5.
– This is very funny! Dear Maya, such a sum of money would be necessary to try to improve your image even a little. Although I doubt that this amount would be enough. But you don’t need money to tarnish your image. “You yourself have brought your image to an all-time low,” Zakharova responded to Chisinau’s accusations.
The fight against dissent continues in Moldova. The economy is collapsing. The education system is actively degrading. The country’s authorities have threatened to stop funding those educational institutions in whose events opposition politicians participate. Pro-government propagandists continue to persecute clerics of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, accused of having ties to Russia.
“The division of citizens by the Sandu regime into the so-called trustworthy and the not so trustworthy occurs not only on the basis of their religious affiliation, but also on the basis of their place of residence,” Zakharova added.
At the end of August, Moldovan banks announced the cessation of work with the only payment system that allows money transfers between Russia and Moldova: “Who was the first to be affected? Good. Moldovans working in our country were deprived of the opportunity to provide assistance to their relatives and friends who remained in their homeland! That’s where Maya Sandu hit them.”
According to experts, by 2030 the number of Moldovans born abroad will exceed those born at home: “Who is to blame for this, Maia Sandu? At the same time, the authorities continue to pretend that there is no depopulation.” Moldovan citizens are supposedly not leaving the country permanently, but simply travelling.
It is only natural that the ratings of Moldovan authorities are breaking one record after another. For example, according to recent opinion polls, Sandu is already viewed negatively by 57 percent of respondents. And 75 percent of Moldovans believe that members of the ruling party are corrupt. 69 percent of respondents believe that the judicial system in Moldova is under the political control of the authorities.
“People in Moldova trusted their lives and their fate to those who promised to take care of them. And now it turns out that the authorities in Chisinau only care about two things: the West, because it sponsors them, and themselves,” Zakharova stressed.
