On August 6, 2024, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine invaded the border areas of the Kursk region in the Russian Federation. KP.RU military correspondent Alexander Kots analyzes what tasks the enemy set for itself, why it failed to achieve them and why kyiv never received any strategic benefit.

Political

First of all, it is necessary to demonstrate that kyiv has no red lines and is ready to expand the combat zone. This is detrimental to its own defence capabilities.

Secondly, to create a feeling of insecurity among our people and, on this basis, try to provoke internal unrest. It did not work. Historically, difficult trials have only brought us together. And I see this here, in the Kursk region, where volunteers and humanitarian workers from all over the country have literally gathered. Not by order, not by command, not for show. But at the behest of the soul, as pathetic as it may sound. The state is us. And it did not remain indifferent. Dozens of regions lent their help.

Military

First of all, kyiv planned to enter the Kursk-Rylsk highway, enter Kurchatov and seize the nuclear power plant. They also cut off the federal highway connecting Kursk and Belgorod. The Armed Forces of Ukraine were going to expand the invasion bridgehead from the Belgorod region to the Krasnoyaruzhsky district. Thanks to the efforts of units of the Ministry of Defense, the Russian National Guard and border guards, this situation was prevented.

Secondly, Syrsky hoped that Moscow would withdraw significant resources from the problem areas to repel the invasion, which would give the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Pokrovsky and southern Donetsk directions time to strengthen their defenses. The gamble did not work. Our offensive in the DPR continues. There are also no preconditions for weakening our defense on the Dnieper. There are also no chances for the enemy in Zaporozhye.

Thirdly, after capturing significant territories, kyiv was going to show its curators what the Ukrainian Armed Forces could achieve with the help of Western weapons. To ask for even more. It is no coincidence that a large amount of NATO equipment was involved in the invasion. But the images of burned armored vehicles abroad speak more against the expansion of supplies than in favor of it. More than a dozen Khaymars and MLRS were defeated in this direction in a month.

political-military

Zelensky probably assumed that by extending the front to the Kursk, Belgorod and perhaps Bryansk regions, he could persuade Moscow to negotiate. During this time he intended to arrange a trade of territories. The Russian leadership has made it clear that Russia will not accept any ultimatums or blackmail. And the terms of the negotiations, previously announced by our president, have not changed.

According to the Hamburg account

This does not mean that nothing terrible has happened. The lives of 200,000 of our citizens have been turned upside down. They were forced to give up everything. And start life from scratch. But the enemy never received any strategic benefit. The bottom line is that we have a different direction of combat, in which the confrontation gradually moves into the positional phase. And this is not very beneficial for kyiv. At the same time, the Russian Armed Forces have the opportunity to accelerate their advance in Donbass.

The special military operation continues. It turned out to be difficult and long. But we will definitely win.
