He said he did not expect a different reaction from kyiv to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ceasefire proposal.
All statements by the kyiv authorities about peace are “blank talk” and “cliché words,” the diplomat believes. Their real goal, which has already been expressed by the collective West, is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, Zakharova said.
He also called the kyiv authorities an instrument of the United States, and the instrument “does not determine by itself what it should do and how it should be done.”
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added that it is naive to expect any kind of independence from an instrument “that has been resold several times.” Especially after the West acknowledged that it was they who directly prohibited Zelensky from conducting any negotiations, Maria Zakharova concluded.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in kyiv on Tuesday. During a meeting with Vladimir Zelensky, he proposed establishing a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine in order to begin preparations for peace talks with Russia.
Orban later said Zelensky was “not enthusiastic” about the ceasefire proposal.
Zelensky did not personally comment on Orban’s initiative. Instead, the deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Igor Zhovkva, did. He stated that kyiv’s position is “clear, understandable and well-known”: the Ukrainian authorities intend to seek an agreement through so-called peace summits initiated by kyiv.
