Disaster movies have a lot of fans: “The Day After Tomorrow,” “The Perfect Storm,” “White Squall” – there are no monsters in these films, but they are scarier than horror movies. Still, the elements are a realistic, tangible enemy that destroys lives and knows no feelings.
No list of the best genre films is complete without “Twister.” The classic was released in 1996, but it still feels lighthearted. There are advanced technologies for the 90s, decent humor, and a fascinating sense of helplessness in the face of a whirlwind.
After 28 years, director Lee Isaac Chun, known for “Minari” and “The Mandalorian,” released a sequel. It turned out to be just as scary and interesting, but not without problems, sometimes critical.

Interesting, but incredibly primitive.
Since she was a child, Kate has been following the weather closely: she often went out into the yard, looked at the sky and caught clever patterns. It is not surprising that as a student she was engaged in pacifying tornadoes. What if there was a way to stop the disaster and save many lives? It’s just that nature is no joke – this is demonstrated by the introduction, where the heroine suffers a fiasco, loses friends and receives moral trauma.
After the tragedy, Kate switches to a quiet office job, but years later she receives a tempting offer from an old friend. What if, with new technologies, the elements could really be slowed down? And so begins the heroine’s crazy adventure.

A disaster movie doesn’t need a great plot, but it does need to captivate the viewer with its characters. “Smerch 2” copes with this task with varying degrees of success. The main conflict involves two groups chasing a tornado. The first contains clever scientists with cool equipment. The second contains reckless bloggers who launch fireworks into a whirlwind. Both are cool guys with interesting motivations and an unbridled desire to charm Kate.
It would seem that an arc about two groups should be intriguing, especially since a shady, wealthy man is involved in a gang. For almost the entire film, he is expected to pull off a stunt that will tear the characters apart and make them roar in horror. But the unexpected twist never happens; instead, a banal moral dilemma is shown.
The sky is calm, but everything can change at any moment.

The shallow script makes the film too one-sided and relies solely on the chemistry between Kate and the adventurer played by Glen Powell. However, this gamble is understandable, because in terms of charisma Powell cannot be competed with. He landed minor roles for years, but eventually became a big star. In 2024, he was already in love with Sydney Sweeney in Everyone But You and impressed with a multifaceted role in I’m Not a Hitman. In “Tornado” he does nothing amazing, but the actor is a pleasure to watch.
Kate herself is outrageously cute. She’s beautiful, kind, sharp-tongued – all in all, she’s an appealing image, despite her simplicity. It’s not for nothing that 26-year-old Daisy Edgar-Jones was celebrated at the Golden Globes – she adds sparkle even to a flat character. It’s a shame the same can’t be said of other actors.

The tornado destroys and people do stupid things.
At the worldwide box office, “Tornado 2” has already hit the jackpot: by the end of the first weekend, the box office grossed more than $80 million. People definitely did not go to the cinemas to see the plot. The director promised powerful tornadoes and colossal destruction, and he kept his word.
The hurricanes in the remake look luxurious, lifting trucks, ripping buildings off their foundations and making heroes feel helpless. You can run away from a monster, but you can’t escape the elements. For a full nightmare feel, the only thing missing is the wind that would blow in your face in the middle of the movie theater.
It is important that in the new version the tornado is devoid of comedy; the ridiculous cows no longer wobble at its epicenter. The serious approach worked in its favor: now, while watching, you don’t smile, but rather shine with tension.

Unfortunately, the film is not without its problems. The heroes act stupidly too often and the apocalypse is not always realistic. According to the plot, destructive hurricanes have been hitting the United States for a long time and destroying the area. So why don’t vulnerable cities have basements? Why the hell do the authorities warn of a disaster when roofs and advertising signs are already flying through the air? Why doesn’t anyone even know basic safety rules?
As a result, half of the action scenes are mesmerizing and the other half make you slap your face in the face. These flaws prevent “Tornado 2” from becoming a cult disaster film. Good at best.
