Rostov put the finishing touches on Orenburg thanks to Golenkov’s courage.
Rostov defeated Orenburg at home in the fourth round of the Russian Cup group stage. Karpin’s team now has nine points, having caught up with the leader of the quartet Lokomotiv. And the Orenburg team had four defeats.
Karpin’s attitude to the Russian Cup is not easy to understand. Last season, as a rule, he fielded a second team for the matches of this tournament and was glad to be able to test the youngsters. But in today’s match against Orenburg, Karpin left six players from the starting eleven of the last round of the RPL. His colleague David Deogracić had only two. It is curious that both coaches did not change goalkeepers: the team’s goal was defended by Odoevsky and Moskvichev, who belonged to Zenit.
The tournament situation forced Orenburg, which did not score a single point in the first round of the group stage, to rely on attack. With the score at 0:0, Deografica’s team was actually better and more proactive. The standards of the Orenburgers turned out to be especially dangerous. And not only from the corner. The visitors had the first chance to score from a free kick: defender Kasimov shot from close range from the goal line, but Odoevsky saved powerfully.

Orenburg scored a relatively quick goal thanks to another type of set piece – a save! Odoevsky wondered in vain where Marin would shoot from the penalty spot, because the Costa Rican sent the ball straight down the middle. If the goalkeeper had remained in his place, he would have taken the 11-meter penalty.

Orenburg generally developed attacks mainly through Marin’s right flank and, accordingly, through Rostovite Chernov’s left flank. Marin himself had to complete a double on a counterattack, which happened due to Vakhanya’s mistake. However, Odoevsky again pulled off a shot after the one-on-one. However, Orenburg had nothing more memorable in the first half. Then Rostov dominated until the break. A couple of times the team from Deograsia was saved from a missed goal by Moskvichev, but in the episode of Golenkov’s goal it was powerless. Surprisingly, the locals also scored from a throw-in! Golenkov received the ball in the penalty area, with his back to the goal under pressure from Kasimov, but he skillfully turned the defender around and shot hard from above. And most importantly – accurately. A very cool goal.

After the break, Rostov also pushed hard. And in segments they pressed hard. Karpin’s team needed a slap in the face to be able to use their strength. At the end of the match, the home team took the lead. It so happened that newcomer Sutormin scored his first goal for Rostov against Orenburg, where he made a name for himself in the RPL. A simple throw into the centre sowed panic in the centre of the visitors’ defence, which Golenkov continued to put pressure on. In addition, Sutormin was helped by a successful rebound from Khotulev. Here even two Moskvichevs would not have helped the Orenburg residents.

Deografica tried to get his team back into the game with a triple substitution. But in the second half, Orenburg were inferior to Rostov in terms of speed and ball control. Yes, in many ways. Karpin’s team almost scored another beautiful goal 20 minutes from the end, when Shchetinin hit the crossbar.
