Is Ubisoft deleting your games and accounts? New scandal with the publisher of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry

We found out if the security of your Ubisoft Connect is worth worrying about.

Ubisoft was at the center of the account deletion scandal: a couple of years ago it became known that the company plans to delete accounts with no activity, and now the process began and many were not aware of what was happening.

Despite many rebuttal statements and comments from the French publisher, many did not understand what was happening. We explain if your Ubisoft account will be deleted after a long period of inactivity.

Why Ubisoft is deleting accounts

In May 2018, the GDPR law (General Data Protection Regulation) came into force in Europe, which obliges companies to treat user data with extreme care and not store it unnecessarily for too long. This is where the very “delete inactive accounts” appears.

Quite a few services have recently started such a purge, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and others. They repeatedly warn about plans to delete the data and the account if the user shows no activity or at least does not cancel the procedure.

Ubisoft is also subject to the law and intends to remove empty and inactive accounts from Ubisoft Connect.

Which Ubisoft accounts are subject to deletion

It is difficult to remove. You must have an empty account with no active subscription or activated games that you have not logged into for more than four years. By “activated games” we mean purchases of games not only from the Ubisoft store, but also anywhere else – a retail key or Steam.

If at least one game was purchased on your account, even if it was purchased on Steam and activated on Ubisoft Connect, your account can no longer be deleted. Even if you have never entered for four (or more) years.

Also, owners of empty accounts will be notified at least once that their account is planned to be deleted; if they wish to keep it, they must cancel the procedure using the link in the letter.

At the same time, Ubisoft does not exclude very rare options when they could mistakenly delete an account with purchased games; if anyone is affected by this, the company requests that they contact support to restore the account. At the same time, it appears that there are no confirmed cases of this to date.

When the rules were explained, some were sure they had been changed, but they weren’t.

what about consoles

As Ubisoft points out, if you play on consoles, then your Ubisoft account cannot be deleted in any way, you shouldn’t worry about that.
