“It doesn’t matter that the Zenit player touched his leg. This is not a penalty.” Refereeing in the sixth round of the RPL

Date: September 13, 2024 Time: 21:07:25

The sixth round of the RPL turned out to be a contrast. On the one hand, there are two important matches at once: Zenit against Spartak and a new version of the “golden” match in May, which never became “golden”. And at the same time we saw the debut of two referees at once. How did they and their colleagues do their job?

Especially for the “Championship”, our expert, former RPL referee Igor Fedotov, analyzed the refereeing in the sixth round of the Russian Championship. Below is his review of all eight matches.

The maximum score is 8.5. The referee receives it if he directs the match without errors.

The score is reduced to 7.9 if the referee makes a key error: incorrectly awarding or failing to award a penalty kick, showing or failing to show a straight red card (to a player or members of the coaching staff), showing or failing to show a second yellow card (to a player or members of the coaching staff).

In case of a second key error, 0.5 points are deducted.

0.1 point is deducted for incorrectly showing or not showing a yellow card (to a player or members of the coaching staff), as well as for missing three to five infringements.

1 point is deducted if the referee on the VAR pointed out the referee’s error on the field, but left his incorrect decision in effect, despite watching the replay.

The score in parentheses is the score of a referee who made a key error in the match, but performed well without that error.

“It seems that the two conspired and killed the referees.” Analysis of the refereeing in the 5th round of the RPL

“Rubin” – “Dynamo” Makhachkala – 2:0

Good job Levnikov. In the 22nd minute he did not show a yellow card to the Dynamo player for rough play. He himself correctly awarded a penalty in the 44th minute for handball. Here it was difficult to realize that the foul had occurred before the penalty area. The decision was changed by the VAR, represented by Bulanov, based on the place of the infringement. After looking, Levnikov correctly changed the yellow card to a red one. But the moment is difficult, so the rating does not go down.

Levnikov’s score is 8.3.

CSKA – Akron – 4:0

Chistyakov did not show Oblyakova a yellow card for simulation. This needs to be fixed and at such times referees should penalise players. In the 85th minute, an incomprehensible decision was made. Why did Chistyakov not see that the Akron player extended his hand to the side and played with it? The VAR, represented by Bezborodov, intervened and the penalty was correctly awarded.

Chistyakov’s score is 7.8.

The match is one, but CSKA is different:

Nikolic’s magic! CSKA had problems with the outsider, but then destroyed him in the first half

“Zenit” – “Spartak” – 0:0

A very difficult match for Meshkov. It is advisable to play these matches without scandals in order to survive. Meshkov survived. He let us fight and controlled the game. For a more difficult match, this is good refereeing. The referee decided the moment of Erakovic’s expulsion in the 62nd minute. This is the second yellow card for rough play.

As for the contact between Mantuan and Khlusevich in the Zenit penalty area, it is absolutely a game moment. Both were looking for the ball, both had the intention to play it. The contact on the legs was minimal. And for me, and according to the recommendations, this is not 11 meters. And it does not matter that the Zenit player touched the opponent’s leg first. I do not see any problem here and, according to the standard that Meshkov maintained, this is just a game situation.

Meshkov’s score is 8.5.

“Akhmat” – “Khimki” – 3:3

After a short break, Bobrovsky returned. Good job, but he missed the mark in the 90th minute. It’s my fault: I stayed in the middle of the field, didn’t see the long pass and didn’t keep up with the pace of the attack. Otherwise, I would have seen that it is necessary to show not a yellow card, but a red one for depriving an obvious chance to score a goal. Fisenko intervened with the VAR and corrected the decision to the correct one.

As for Khimki’s third goal, it is impossible to say from replays whether the ball came into contact with Sadigov’s hand. Moreover, the Khimki player’s hand was in a natural position. And finally, another player scored a goal. Such a handball, if there was one, is not punishable. Fisenko checked and found no obvious error either.

Bobrovsky’s score is 7.9 (8.4).

Fakel – Orenburg – 1:0

Bad debut for Abrosimov. He hit me with the ball and I didn’t like it at all. It’s immediately obvious that he’s a top-flight referee. He didn’t show the second yellow card in an obvious moment when a Fakel player hit his opponent in the face with his elbow. The assistant was blocked by the players; the substitute referee, who, judging by the replay, was looking in the direction of the episode, may also be responsible. But of course, the decision had to be made by Abrosimov himself.

Abrosimov also did not show the obvious yellow card to the Orenburg player in the 83rd minute for rough play.

“Wings of the Soviets” – “Pari NN” – 3:1

Another newcomer is Cheremnykh. In the 24th minute he did not show a yellow card to the Wings player for disrupting a promising attack. I liked him more than Abrosimov, there is effort, movement. But he was timid in managing the game and the players felt it. It was clear that they were trying to strangle him. Until the Wings took the lead, no one calmed down.

Cheremnykh’s score is 8.3.

More details about the match:

The debutant turned the match around with two goals in five minutes. What a great comeback from Samara!

Dynamo – Krasnodar – 0:1

In the 72nd minute, Karasev did not show a yellow card to Cordoba. The Krasnodar player extended his leg and hit Lunev in the head. Here he should have at least been given a yellow card, because he could have broken his facial bone.

The most notable moment was Laxalt’s fall in the 85th minute. For me, the Dynamo player himself began to fall, feeling Chernikov’s hands on his back. According to the screenshots, it is 11 meters, but in terms of dynamics such contact is not enough. And Laxalt fell not because Chernikov held him with his hands.

It was a tough game. Karasev quickly showed Krasnodar a lot of yellow cards, but he realized that something had gone wrong and tried to fix it. Something like that. He lost control a little bit. And when I realized that there would soon be eliminations, I began to cut the game short in a good way.

I don’t see any positive dynamics with Karasev. It doesn’t matter: he relies on authority. And it shows in him: detachment, he doesn’t talk to the players. Karasev now has this position: I tried to explain to you, if you don’t understand, goodbye. In general, he doesn’t want to get involved in discussions, he doesn’t need it, he’s not interested. Simple: I called a foul, that means I’m right. And it’s obvious that now his thoughts are not focused on football. I was appointed, I came, I worked, and the authority will help. Everything is automatic. As long as it rolls.

Karasev’s score is 8.4.

“Lokomotiv” – “Rostov” – 3:2

Moskalev seemed to be working normally, but in the 62nd minute, Osipenko hit his leg. What could Moskalev have seen that for him it was not an 11-meter shot? If he explained to Shadykhanov that this was not a foul for him, then the VAR would not intervene. Most likely, it was. Therefore, the VAR should not be blamed here. This is purely Moskalev’s decision. He thought so. And this is a scandal, because the penalty was not awarded, and this is a clear chance to score. Nobody understands anything, I don’t understand it, because according to all the recommendations it is a foul. Probably only Moskalev understands it.

As for Ryskin, he spoke correctly and expressed his opinion. I think that even Mazhich does not understand moments like Osipenko’s. Moreover, it was Moskalev who did not even call a foul when, in the Krasnodar-CSKA match, Spertsyan hit Rocha in the leg. Ryskin can be understood, and the statements of the Rostov management are absolutely correct.

Now there is a wave of criticism of the refereeing. And the department has no time to stop it. This should have been done after the match between Dynamo Makhachkala and Paris NN. We did not have time. Then it was necessary to rein in with the Orenburg sports director Andreev. Today, people do not care so much about the violation itself: it immediately goes to the CES, the department is already distrusted. The game itself is no longer interesting to them. The moment to quell this wave was missed. Although they tried: the mini-training was an attempt to stage everything and explain something to the judges. But this turned out to be not enough. People got bored after last season, when there were almost no scandals. Now three mistakes – and they immediately began to choke. You need to be prepared for this and immediately activate the antidote.

It would be possible to organise a meeting with the clubs during the international break and discuss all the issues. And, as difficult as it may be, it is always necessary to hold a press conference for resonant moments. It is a necessary feedback to the clubs and the fans. The temperature would definitely drop.

Moskalev’s score is 7.9.
