Medvedev, Mirra, Kalinskaya and other Russians in the Wimbledon draw. We are supporting our own

Date: June 30, 2024 Time: 10:45:52

Wimbledon will be held in London (United Kingdom) from July 1 to 14. This tournament, considered the most prestigious of all the Majors, takes place on grass. In the last week of June, qualifying competitions were held to determine the 16 athletes who would complete the men’s and women’s teams. There were no Russians in the men’s team, but 10 of our compatriots entered the women’s team. Only one of them reached the final: Erika Andreeva, 20 years old, Mirra’s older sister.

Andreeva reached the Wimbledon qualifying final. She is the only Russian at this stage.

In the decisive qualifying match, Andreeva’s rival, ranked 99th in the WTA ranking, was the 22-year-old British Sonay Kartal, number 295 in the world. In the first set, Andreeva was unable to properly establish her serve (60% of the first shots) and made too many errors in her rallies. This was the reason why the Russian lost the game. Erica defended her serve with great difficulty in the first game, after which she lost four games in a row. She had no breaking points during this period. In the sixth game, Andreeva played a break, but it was not enough for her. And in the ninth game she completely lost her serve: 6: 3 in favor of Kartal in 42 minutes.

Andreeva played frankly weakly in the second game. In the first five games he won only four points. After 0:5 it was difficult to expect anything. Erica’s British opponent achieved a confident victory on the third match point by 6:3, 6:1 in 1 hour and 12 minutes.

Despite the defeat, Andreeva Sr. still has a chance to enter the main draw as a lucky loser, because she occupies a high place in the WTA rankings. If this does not happen, then six Russians and 11 Russians will compete in the Wimbledon men’s draw.

Men

Daniil Medvedev (fifth seed)

The 2021 US Open champion’s grass preferences fall somewhere in between his favorite and least favorite hard clay. A year ago, Medvedev reached the semifinals of Wimbledon and so far this is his greatest achievement at the London Major. This time the situation is complicated by the fact that Daniil did not make it into the top 4 finishers. This means that he can face one of the representatives of the top four already in the quarterfinals. The Russian did not start the current grass season very well, losing in the second round to Halle.

Andrei Rublev (6)

Before every Grand Slam tournament, the question comes to mind: when will Rublev finally win the quarterfinals of a Major? In the 2023 season, Andrei reached this stage of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. However, he still has no TBS semi-finals: 10 losses in 10 quarterfinals. This season in Halle, the Russian lost in the first round.

Karen Khachanov (21)

Khachanov missed the last two Wimbledons. In the 2022 season, all Russians and Belarusians were suspended from the tournament, and a year ago Karen did not play for a couple of months due to injury. At the moment, the Russian’s best result at Wimbledon is the 2021 quarterfinals. Khachanov started the current grass season poorly, suffering two defeats in two matches.

Roman Safiullin

Safiullin was the discovery of Wimbledon last year. In 2023, he sensationally reached the quarter-finals in London – needless to say, it was his best result at a Major. This year, Roman, like Khachanov, lost two out of two matches on grass.

Pavel Kotov

Kotov will step onto the grass courts of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. This season, Pavel has progressed in the majors: if in previous years he had four defeats in four matches, in 2024 he reached the second round at the Australian Open and the third round at Roland Garros. The Russian has not played since Paris, so the grass season will begin for him only in July.

Aslan Karatsev

The 2021 Australian Open semi-finalist has so far won just one match in the Wimbledon main draw. In 2023, Karatsev reached the second round here. Aslan, like our other singles skaters, did not start the current grass season in the best way. In Halle he lost in the first qualifying round.

Women

Daria Kasatkina (14)

Kasatkina, whose best result at a major was a Roland Garros semi-final in 2022, reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals six years ago. It is difficult to say whether the first Russian racket will be able to repeat that achievement. As usual, a lot will depend on the draw, which will take place on Friday, June 28. In the first two majors of 2024, Daria did not advance beyond the second round. In the 500 meters in Berlin she only won one match, but in Eastbourne she reached the quarter-finals. And today she herself plays with the 2021 US Open champion, Emma Raducanu.

Lyudmila Samsonova (15)

It was at Wimbledon that Samsonova showed her best result in Grand Slam tournaments. In the 2021 season she reached the round of 16 here and a year later she repeated this achievement at the US Open. This time, Russian fans have high hopes for Lyudmila. In mid-June she won the title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Then, however, Samsonova fell in the first round of the “500” in Berlin and she only won one match in Bad Homburg, but we assume that the athlete made good use of the free time.

Anna Kalinskaya (17)

So far, Kalinskaya has two losses in two matches at Wimbledon. But before the current Australian Open, where the Russian reached the quarterfinals, her statistics were even worse: not a single victory and four defeats in Melbourne. Anna is having her best season, also on grass. At the “500” in Berlin she made it to the title fight, in which she lost to Jessica Pegula.

Ekaterina Alexandrova (22)

Grass is Alexandrova’s favourite surface. This is exactly the conclusion that emerges when studying the tennis player’s results. Catherine won the tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch twice in a row and in 2024 she stopped in the semi-finals. In Berlin she lost in the second round, but there her opponent was not just anyone, but Cori Gauff. In Bad Homburg, the Russian, who was also defeated in the second round, did not have enough strength. At Wimbledon, Alexandrova, who has fallen out of the top 20 of the world rankings, faces the important task of protecting points in order to reach the fourth round – so far, this is Ekaterina’s best result at the TBS.

Mirra Andreeva (24)

A year ago, Mirra, aged 16, reached the fourth round at her first Wimbledon. Why not aim for more now? In addition, there are prerequisites for this. At Roland Garros, the tennis player, who had matured a year, reached the top four. And all this under the strict guidance of the legendary Conchita Martínez, Wimbledon champion in 1994. In Eastbourne, Andreeva Jr., however, stumbled in the first round, losing to the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremskaya. But, as in the case of Samsonova, we assume that an early start will help the tennis player arrive at Wimbledon fully prepared.

Mirra started the grass season with a disappointing loss. She gave the Ukrainian a tough three-setter.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (25)

The Roland Garros 2021 finalist played her first Wimbledon 17 years ago. In the 2016 season, Pavlyuchenkova reached the quarterfinals of the London Major, but she missed the last two tournaments, as did Karen Khachanov. Anastasia opened the grass season this week with a first round loss to Eastbourne.

Veronica Kudermetova

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Kudermetova never made it past the second round. It’s time to break the trend! However, it is alarming that the current season is clearly not going well for Veronica. In the first two TBS games she did not achieve a single victory; in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Berlin she stopped fighting after the second round. As a result, Kudermetova fell to 36th place in the world rankings.

Anastasia Potapova

Recently, Potapova has increased her performance on TBS. In 2023 she reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time and at Roland Garros 2024 she reached the round of 16, something she had never done before in a Major. At the Birmingham tournament, Anastasia reached the semi-finals, but at Eastbourne she retired during the first round match.

Diana Schneider

The 20-year-old athlete will play in the Wimbledon tournament for the first time. This year, Schneider suffered two defeats in two matches at Grand Slam tournaments. Herb season is already in full swing for Diana. In ‘s-Hertogenbosch she was eliminated in the first round, in Birmingham she reached the top eight and today in Bad Homburg she faces former world number two Paula Badosa.

Anna Blinkova

Blinkova, who reached the third round of Wimbledon a year ago, entered this grass season frankly without success. In ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Birmingham she suffered two defeats in two matches. In Bad Homburg things were going well. In the first round, Anna defeated the 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu, and today she must finish her match with Beatrice Haddad-Maya, which lasted two days due to rain.

Elina Avanesian

Avanesyan, who reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros twice in a row, will perform for the first time at Wimbledon. In Birmingham and Eastbourne she lost in the first round, and in the latter case Elina had to withdraw due to injury.
