Nicolas Cage turned manic in the movie “Soul Collector.” Is it worth watching?

Date: August 26, 2024 Time: 15:27:52

Until recently, Nicolas Cage was on the sidelines of cinema and starred in short films. But everything has changed: in 2024, Cage is once again considered a legend with many new hits in his portfolio. “Mandy”, “Pig”, “The Unbearable Weight of Enormous Talent”, “The Hero of Our Dreams” – these are just some of the recent hits.

On July 25, “The Collector of Souls” will be released in Russia, in which the actor played a crazy maniac. In the West, the film has already become a box office sensation. Has Cage really played another successful role?

Solid horror with a couple of flaws.

FBI agents are used to hunting down run-of-the-mill maniacs. They take fingerprints, interview witnesses and, step by step, get closer to the villain. But their methods are not suited to investigating a new series of murders. The fact is that prosperous families die and no traces of outside intervention remain at the crime scene.

The police would attribute it all to a fit of rage, in which the father commits horrors and commits suicide, but the real maniac leaves letters and openly plays with the investigators. Is he really somehow playing with people’s minds and leading them to sin? How to stop him? This puzzle is solved by Lee Harker, a girl with unusual abilities and a strange connection with a maniac.

“Soul Collector” is not a horror movie. There are few screams and absolute cruelty in it. As for the general atmosphere, the new film is generally reminiscent of noir detective stories like Zodiac. But director Osgood Perkins managed to recreate the feeling of unease. He skillfully puts pressure on the psyche, creates tension, throws one terrifying scene after another. This kind of darkness fascinates the viewer, which is important for horror.

The film is also beautifully shot. The sun barely shines, public places like bars look gloomy, the makeup is deliberately off-putting, and the characters behave strangely. Moments like these make watching even more uncomfortable.

It’s curious that Cage’s face doesn’t appear in the trailers or promotional shots.

The problem is that Osgood Perkins came up with an interesting concept and presented it effectively, but he failed to clearly complete the plot. As interesting as a detective story is, it needs a good ending. Alas, in “The Soul Collector” the ending is crumpled and simply mediocre. The viewer is simply bombarded with paranormalism and messy plot twists, and then the credits roll, while forgetting about the important questions that remain unanswered.

A good ending could have made Soul Collector a great horror movie. Instead, we have simply a good movie that fans of the genre should not miss.

There are many creepy scenes in the movie.

Nicolas Cage screams and makes faces again

It seems that the director gave Cage a simple instruction: to play as usual. Therefore, the actor does not hold back at all: he makes faces, makes crazy speeches, opens his eyes and screams selflessly. Surprisingly, in the horror setting he looks fresh. If in other films Cage’s grimaces are familiar, in “Soul Collector” they are really annoying. Therefore, the legend should be praised for his role as a maniac!

There are no complaints about the other actors either. They try, they play their fear convincingly and they shudder at the sight of a creepy silhouette in the distance. It’s just that the characters don’t have any memorable features. For example, Agent Leigh Harper is nice to look at, but after the credits roll, her image disappears from your mind. All that remains is the crazy Cage with the most disgusting smile in the world.

The actress tries, but her character is boring.

“Soul Collector”: Is it worth watching?

Soul Collector is a good, but not great, horror movie. It’s worth watching for the intense investigation and the insane Cage, but the clumsy ending and dull characters ruin the experience. Fans of the genre shouldn’t miss out on the novelty, though.

“Soul Collector” rating: 7 out of 10

Appreciated

Cage is beautiful. The film is beautifully shot.

I dont like him

Broken ending. Boring characters.
