Referee scandal in the Euro Cup! Will Italy demand a replay of the match against Switzerland?

Maxim Pakhomov June 29, 2024, 20:50 Moscow time

The Italians arrived too early in the other half of the field.

The first match of the European Championship playoffs and immediately a scandal. Switzerland faced Italy and won 1:0 after the first half. The second half started with a quick goal – and also against the Italians. But it was impossible to count it.

The fact is that the half was restarted incorrectly. This can be clearly seen in the broadcast: the Italian national team players ran into the opponent’s half earlier than expected, but the main referee of the match, Szymon Marciniak, did not notice. Soon Switzerland scored a goal.

The key to this double episode is the violation of the rules of the game. Referee Igor Fedotov told us exactly what was wrong and what was necessary for Italy to demand a replay:

– In the Italy-Switzerland match, the kick-off procedure was violated in the second half. The Italian team players, before their teammate resumed play with the kick-off, ran to the other half of the field. After that, the ball did not leave the field and a goal was scored against the Italian team. According to the rules of the game, the referee was to stop the game and restart the kick-off procedure. It doesn’t matter who broke the rule: the Italians or the Swiss. The referee was forced to restart the second half. As the Swiss scored a goal, but the ball did not leave the field and the game did not stop, this was a moment of protest. Italy can lodge a protest and request a replay if the score is 2:1. It is important that this error affects the result: conditionally the final result will be 2:1, but without it it would be 1:1, since the rules of the game were violated.

And here we follow the second match of the day:
