Twisted Metal is one of the most important games of my childhood. My friends and I would often gather in front of the PS1, picking out weird heroes like a man squeezed between the wheels, and launching rockets at each other. The reward was a wild fan and cute videos where the demon perverted the winner’s wish and turned his life into a nightmare.
Twisted Metal hasn’t released any games for a long time (but it looks like a new one is in the works), but a series of the same name was released the other day. After mediocre trailers, the show was not hopeful, but the authors surprised everyone. “Screech of Metal” is a thrash project, but incredibly exciting.

The series aired on Peacock. There is no official translation into Russian.
Additionally, the series’ 10-episode first full season premiered on the same day, July 27. A second season has yet to be announced.

Crazy story about a world in chaos
The series tells about the future, where the world went to hell: the Internet was cut off, states collapsed, bandits went crazy. As a result, the normal people surrounded the cities with a high wall and drove the criminals into the wasteland. Now all of America is a territory of death with occasional oases.
The protagonist John Doe is a brave courier who travels between cities and delivers goods. He doesn’t remember anything from the past, he just loves his car and dreams of settling down in the city. One day, the mayor of the settlement offers John a deal: the hero brings a cargo from a dangerous place, and in return he receives a cozy apartment in a safe place. And so the long journey begins.

The games were based on a survival tournament, but the concept is different in the series. Grind of Metal is a road movie in which the characters travel across the country and get into new trouble every episode. At first, the idea seems strange: the hero played by Anthony Mackie lacks charisma, the world’s mythology is full of stereotypes, most of the jokes are inappropriate. As a result, the entire first episode you frankly yawn, and the second – you twist your face from garbage.
The urge to cut the program is hard to combat, but after the bizarre introduction, something strange happens. You are imbued with the madness of the universe and for the first time you feel an inexplicable charm. It turns out that the series is so bad, that it is even good.
Sadistic local police officers torture victims through the song Barbie Girl, a maniac lures heroes into a tedious hour-long performance, a homeless pervert in a gas mask instead of underpants runs along the roads – all this It’s as ridiculous as it gets, but very cool. !

Another secret is dynamics. The episodes are 30 minutes long and each episode is something new. In one series, the heroes find themselves in a crazy theater, in another they run away from cruel law enforcement officers, in the third they explore a city of trucks. With this approach, it is impossible to get bored and stop watching.
Don’t forget about car shootings.
For most of the series, the characters leisurely travel across the country or walk alone, but the essence of Twisted Metal has not been forgotten. The heroes’ cars are equipped with machine guns and rocket launchers, which are often used. Only in the first few episodes is there a dynamic skirmish with raiders in jeeps, a shootout with Sweet Tooth’s truck, a fight to the death with Agent Stone.
The action lacks sensible staging and decent graphics, but Metal Grinder isn’t aiming for masterpieces. In a critical situation, the heroes make stupid jokes, the villains make formulaic speeches, and the laws of physics are violated every second. Therefore, you turn a blind eye to mistakes – they can be completely attributed to creative decisions.

Standard battles are also in place. Basically, the massacre is carried out by Sweet Tooth, Twisted Metal’s most recognizable hero. This is a beefy masked clown who ruthlessly chops heads and dreams of being recognized. The character was played by professional wrestler Samoa Joe; no wonder he moves and strikes with the utmost grace.
Comedian Will Arnett (BoJack Horseman) provided the voice of Sweet Tooth. This makes the clown not only strong, but also an extremely charismatic character. His catchy speeches and bloodthirsty antics are the main virtues of the series.

If you skip Metal Grind, nothing bad will happen. The series has yet to get a chance, though: It’s painfully dynamic and fun. Just don’t jump to conclusions after the first few episodes, let the project play out.
