The first international training camps of the autumn are continuing. The Spanish national team visited the Serbian national team in the first round of the Nations League and should have won. The advantage in shots was 23 to 9, in corner kicks 9 to 2 and in percentage of ball possession 74 to 26. The home team defended seriously (read as a “bus”), while the guests lacked execution and luck. The last zeros on the scoreboard did not suit the winner of the European Championship.

However, the Swiss team also have nothing to boast about. Not only did they miss the equaliser in the last 10 minutes of the away game against Denmark (0-2), but they also lost two players at the same time. Nico Elvedi received a straight red card in the 52nd minute and Granit Xhaka received a second yellow card in the 87th.
For the Spaniards, ahead of the upcoming face-to-face clash, this is just a gift. While options can be found to replace central defender Elvedi, there is simply no one to replace central midfielder Xhaka. In Murat Yakin’s team, Granit is the captain and a pivotal player. So it is obviously a loss.
Historically, the Spanish national team has found it difficult to play against the Swiss national team. In the last seven direct meetings that have taken place since 2010, La Furia Roja has only managed two victories in regular time, with two defeats and three draws. But in recent years, the Swiss have also shown competitive football.
Under Murat Yakin, the Swiss national team reached the Euro 2024 playoffs, never losing in Group A, and also defeated Italy (2-0) and almost eliminated England (1-1, 3-5 on penalties).
