Running 1.5 km doing 1410 lunges seems like a serious athletic challenge. This was what Konstantin Belov threw at himself. We learned how the Russian record was set.

Konstantin Belov – organizer of massive sporting events, ambassador of Spirit Fitness sports clubs. Master of sports of karate in the Kyokushin style, candidate for master of sports of Thai boxing, champion of Russia in bodybuilding. He recently set a Russian record: he walked 1,560 m in 60 minutes and performed 1,410 lunges; no athlete in Russia had ever done it.

“Why isn’t it still me?”

athlete, set a Russian lunge record

“I saw on the news that an American fitness trainer set a world record by walking 3.5 km with lunges; I was very interested in this and probably even considered it a challenge for myself. My first thought was, “Why isn’t this me yet?”

I decided to test my body and find out what it is capable of; I had never had an experience like this before. I am very resilient and I do high repetition exercises, that is, I do 50 or more repetitions of any exercise, whether it is weighted squats or push-ups.

I have more than 25 years of experience in sports; At six years old my parents enrolled me in Kyokushin karate. There I achieved good results, became a master of the sport and won the world championship. After that, he took up Thai boxing and became a candidate for master of sports, and also tried mixed martial arts.

Even while in the military, I competed in hand-to-hand combat for my unit and met the CCM standard. Afterwards, he did not leave sports and devoted himself to the fitness industry: he competed in bodybuilding competitions, won prizes at the Moscow championship and at various exhibitions, and won the Russian championship. To this day, sport is a big part of my life.

“I ate 3600 kcal a day”

I prepared for the record for three months: in the first week I began to walk very actively only with lunges, every day I set a timer for 60 minutes and walked, but soon my legs simply stopped recovering and they hurt permanently.

I began to “dilute” the load; On Monday I had an hour of lunges. On Tuesday I worked functionally (weights, ropes, carts, jumping, etc.). On Wednesday, an hour of cardio, which included 15 minutes of CrossFit cycling, 15 minutes of rowing, and 30-40 minutes of walking up a hill with a maximum incline at a medium pace. On Thursday, lunge training again for 60 minutes. Friday was one of the hardest days: I dedicated myself to stretching, which is my weakest point. On Saturday: shoulder, arm and abdominal training with 30 minutes of outdoor running. On Sunday I spent time on the muscle groups that are “lagging” (back extensor, gastrocnemius, knee ligaments).

I focused the training on developing functionality and the lunges themselves allowed me to get used to a large number of steps. It is important to take into account nutrition, it was balanced. 3600 kcal per dayabout 160-170 g of proteins, fats – 85 g and carbohydrates – 400-450 g. This amount of carbohydrates is necessary to provide strength and energy during training. Protein is necessary as a building material; I got 1.5g per 1kg of my weight. Well, in general we cannot live without fat, and here 1 g of fat per 1 kg of my weight is enough for me.

“The most difficult thing is to work with your head”

The first thing that horrified me was the scale of the plan. I trained in the gym and didn’t go out, but when I got to the embankment I was horrified by how long and how much I would have to spend. The emotions were mixed: anger and joy at the same time.

When preparing for these types of sporting challenges, correct exercise technique and measured progression are important. My advice is to wear knee pads, warm up very well before training and complement your training with other leg exercises to strengthen and develop strength.

“Anyone can walk 500 m”

I can divide the whole trip into parts: the first 250 m was a warm-up, I picked up the pace and my thoughts were very positive, but after literally 180 m the pace dropped, my legs started to “acidify” and I started fighting with myself. Imagine, after only 420 m, “my imp” has already started looking for an escape route.

As I got to 500m, I said to myself, “Okay, it’s been 500, anyone can do this.” With this phrase I made it clear to myself that I was at the beginning and that the heat was still ahead. The next 400 m were monotonous, questions arose in my head: “Why do you need this? Who stuck out their tongue at you? My inner warrior responded to them.

“The main thing is that I want to leave a mark on history. “I want young people to follow my example and follow the right path.”

From 900 to 1000 m there was an emotional climb, the first four-digit figure of the record lifted the spirits a lot. I walked another 250 m thinking there was little time left. Around 12:50 I was ready to die on this embankment path, but go to the end.

“I’ll go again!”

The finish line is the last 10 meters. I took a deep breath, exhaled with a shout, and reached my record to applause. The feeling at the end of the distance was unforgettable, but the first thing I said was: “I’ll be back!” My nervous system couldn’t take it and I burst into tears; I was very surprised by this reaction of my body, but I felt better.

I plan to walk 2.5 km; I have worked on my mistakes, now I am actively preparing, I have everything to walk more than 2.5 km and beat the world record. Of course I want to compete, since I am an active fighter who is happy to try myself in a professional league. Showing results in competitions and sports programs is something like “Titans”, where you can test your strength and surprise people!
