Great boxing is not limited to the heavyweight division. A great night of boxing took place in Las Vegas, where lightweights Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin faced off in the main event. The boys’ overall record was a respectable 49-0, but Tank was considered the clear favorite. Even despite numerous scandals and even prison sentences, Davis is still considered a boxing superstar, and rightly so. On the other hand, Martin could well have expected a long downtime for his opponent, as Gervonta had not fought in over 14 months.
The fight, in which the WBA championship belt was at stake, began at a fairly active pace. Martin seemed especially cheerful as he persistently tried to take the center of the ring. However, Davis did not completely relinquish the initiative, although he did not throw many punches in the first round. Gervonta swung slowly, gradually getting closer to the challenger. Tank’s defense was not ideal: he missed several painful blows, but in the second three minutes he himself let Frank feel the power of his blow.
But in the third round, Davis almost found himself on the verge of a knockdown, as Martin’s right hand missed. The overall favorite did not look very convincing and he lost on the independent judges’ cards. The challenger demonstrated convincing and fast boxing, which Gervonta clearly lacked at the beginning. But, starting in the fifth round, Tank increasingly managed to trap his opponent against the ropes, and Martin had a very hard time there. He missed heavy blows and was forced to retreat constantly. The pattern of the battle began to change in favor of the current champion.
In the seventh round, Davis began to completely destroy the challenger, literally destroying Martin’s defense with strong punches. And in the eighth round, everything ended very brutally: cornering his opponent again, Tank sent Frank to the ground with a left hook, and it was clear that this was a clean knockout, the referee’s countdown was not necessary.
