So, in the semifinals of the sprint skating, the Olympic champion of the 2022 Games defeated Ivan Zhilinsky. Ustyugov powerfully rolled to the finish line, proving that he is a master not only on snow, but also on asphalt. There is no chance for an opponent!
But in the final, the eminent skier lost to Dmitry Voronin. But silver is a worthy result. After all, Sergey’s rivals were real skate sprint monsters. But experts say that if the track had been wetter during the final, Ustyugov would have been able to win.
“I was surprised”
A few days earlier, Ustyugov himself said that he could give up the races in Khanty-Mansiysk. It was all the fault of the slopes, which the skier “fears”. But the experienced skier still stuck around and showed his teeth.
Ustyugov’s first coach, Ivan Bragin, said he was surprised by the student’s silver medal at the Russian Rollerski Championships.
“Of course, I was also surprised that Sergey made it to the final and took second place. Good result. It’s a completely different sport, you could say. Of course, Dmitry won in the class. Probably, Ustyugov did not have enough tactical range of movements in equal weather conditions. And so, well done, it went well! Bragin told Match TV.

“Good exercise”
Sergey Ustyugov is the only one of the top teams that participates in the Russian roller ski championship. Before the start of the competition, the athlete said that this is an integral part of preparing for the winter season.
“I don’t set myself the goal of ‘winning’. For me the most important thing is participation. I do cross-country skiing, and roller skiing is part of the preparation for the winter season. To make it much easier to train in my head, I consider this championship an excellent warm-up. It will work out well to escape, I will be very happy, if it doesn’t work out, I won’t even be angry.

By the way, before the skating sprint, Ustyugov warmed up by performing in the 3×6 km relay. Here, together with Ivan Vakhrameev and Pavel Vernigora, Ustyugov took gold for the KhMAO team. At the end of the race, Sergey rehearsed the final streak from him. In the last meters of the distance, the Olympic champion was ahead of Andrei Krasnov, who represented St. Petersburg.
Prior to the skating sprint, the titled Ustyugov took part in the 15km freestyle time trial and the 20km classic pursuit time trial, where he finished eighth and sixth respectively. And finally, there will also be a massive start of 30 kilometers.
