The suspension of air traffic at Munich airport due to heavy snowfall has caused the cancellation of 48 flights to different Spanish airports so far, the airport manager Aena has reported.
The number of operations planned this Saturday from Munich airport to Spain amounts to 63, although Aena has not yet confirmed the cancellation of the rest of the pending flights.
The flights whose cancellation has been confirmed originating in the Bavarian capital affect the airports of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Tenerife South, Palma, Bilbao, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Valencia.
The storm of low temperatures and snowfall also affects airports in England and Scotland. Aena sources have told EFE that, unlike connections from Munich, they are not aware of any more canceled flights from other capitals.
Suspended traffic
The flight has been suspended at Munich airport this morning, for the moment until Sunday at 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT), due to heavy snowfall, which has also affected rail transport in southern Germany.
The airport of the Bavarian capital on its internet portal “strongly” asks passengers not to go to the airport this Saturday and to check the status of their flight with their airline before going to the airport tomorrow.
Initially, it had been reported that air traffic would be suspended until noon today. Until that moment, around 320 of the 760 flights scheduled for this Saturday had already been cancelled, after some 160 operations had to be canceled last night.
The German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) also reported that due to the “arrival of winter in southern Germany there will be restrictions on rail transport on December 2 and 3.” Public transport has also stopped circulating in Munich because the snow plows are not enough to remove the snow.
