The information was confirmed by State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein. According to him, the man who opened fire on the police died between 30 and 40 minutes after the operation.
“The repeat offender, neutralized today in the northern capital, was not shot, but probably suffered serious concussions during the assault on his apartment,” the parliamentarian wrote on his Telegram channel. He also posted a photo of the attacker.
Eyewitnesses said that a 59-year-old man first shot at a shop assistant located on Narodnaya Street. He then took a woman hostage.
Security forces arriving at the scene evacuated all residents of neighboring apartments. After negotiations, the assault began. The special forces entered the apartment through the balcony using noise grenades.
According to preliminary information, the deceased had previously served a sentence for murder and other crimes and, after his release, was periodically admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
