Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 07:00:40

Algeria consolidates as the main supplier of natural gas to Spain so far in 2023, after having again been the first supplier last July, with a total of 9,106 gigawatt hours (GWh), to cover 28.7% of monthly demand, according to data from the latest Enagás bulletin.

Thus, in the first seven months of the year, the African country, historically the main Spanish supplier of natural gas, although last year it suffered ‘sorpasso’ from the United States, has supplied more than 59,100 Gwh to the country, to cover the 25 % of total demand up to July.

Algeria thus stands ahead of Russia, which with 49,909 GWh has supplied 21.1% of Spain’s natural gas demand in 2023, having also been the second main source of gas arriving in the country in July, with 8,764 GWh , 27.6% of the total. In third place, in the month of July and in the first seven months of 2023, is the United States, with 19.1% of the total demand this year, ahead of Nigeria, with 13.9%.

As far as underground storage is concerned, they are probably at their maximum fill level, reaching 99% at the end of July. In the same month last year they were at 78%.

Demand falls 15.9%

For its part, the national demand for natural gas in the month of July increased a decrease of 15.9% compared to the same period last year, with 26,199 GWh. The drop in both conventional demand (-13%) and that of the electricity sector (-39.4%) stood out. In the first seven months of the year, the consumption of natural gas accumulates a decline of 14% compared to the same period in 2022, with 192,517 GWh.
