Mercedes produces purely electric cars under the EQ subbrand, while BMW calls the line i. Thus, to avoid confusion, the Bavarian car manufacturer decided to abandon the letter i in the name of models with a gasoline internal combustion engine. The suffix d will remain for cars with a diesel engine, the letter e – for hybrids.

The names will change as the model range is updated. The first to lose it is the new generation BMW X3 G45.
