Brazilian President Lula criticized sanctions against Russia – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

“Unilateral sanctions cause enormous damage to the population of the countries affected by them. In addition to not achieving the intended objectives, they hinder the processes of mediation, prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Lula said.

Referring to the issue of the Ukrainian conflict, the Brazilian politician emphasized that the current situation highlights the inability of the UN member countries to achieve peace.

“The UN must fulfill its role as builder of a more just and fraternal world. But it will only do so if its members have the courage to express their outrage at inequality and work tirelessly to overcome it. The conflict in Ukraine exposes our collective failure in achieve the predominance of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” Lula said.

The UN Security Council (SC) was also criticized, which, according to the Brazilian president, “is fragile and little by little is losing authority.”

“This fragility arises, in particular, from the actions of the permanent members of the Security Council, who initiate conflicts in search of territorial expansion or regime change. The paralysis (of the Security Council – editor’s note) is the most proof eloquent of the urgency of reforming it, making it more representative and efficient,” Lula concluded.
