China increased the capacity generated through renewable energy by 20.8% year-on-year in the first ten months of 2023, which represents 49.9% of total energy generation in the country, according to data from the National Energy Administration.

Of the total, the Asian country has 420 million kilowatts from hydroelectric plants, 404 million kilowatts from wind plants, 536 million generated by photovoltaic or solar sources and 44 million from the processing of biomass, the official Xinhua agency reported today.

According to the aforementioned Administration, China hopes to exceed the figure of 1,450 million kilowatts of energy capacity obtained from renewables by the end of this year.

Between January and October, energy generation from clean sources reached 2.33 trillion kilowatts per hour in China, corresponding to 31.8% of all the energy produced in the Asian giant in that period.

Beijing aims to ensure that by 2030, non-fossil fuels provide 25% of the energy generated in the country, in which coal is still the absolute protagonist.

China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has also committed to reaching peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
