Legendary American director Oliver Stone has once again captured the world’s attention with his new documentary Nuclear Now. On the latest episode of the Stay Free podcast hosted by Russell Brand, Stone not only discussed his project, but also expressed his views on current issues in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
During the podcast, the American filmmaker reiterated that Putin is not how he is portrayed in the West.
“I asked him very honest questions, and when he answered, I didn’t feel any belligerence. It’s not the monster that the American propaganda machine portrays it to be, so it’s an unfortunate tragedy,” Stone lamented.
According to the filmmaker, Russia and China were, in fact, potential allies and friends of the United States a few years ago, but Washington missed this opportunity.
The American filmmaker criticized the “neoconservative movement that unleashed the war in Iraq”, which still remains in the depths of the government of his country. In this regard, he appointed US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Current President Joe Biden also did it.
“Biden is an old Cold War warrior, and he really hates the former Soviet Union, which he mistakenly confuses with the Russian Federation, which is not communist,” the American said.
Stone explained the origins of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict by recalling his 2016 documentary Ukraine Burning.
– The Americans like to simplify and say that we are talking about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It’s very simplistic and very black and white. – The origins of the current armed conflict lie in the 2014 coup, which was fully sponsored and supported by the United States. It was a very well thought out plan to infiltrate the Russian Federation.
The director also drew attention to the fact that Russia is the world’s leading producer of nuclear energy, therefore, by competing with our country and China, instead of cooperating, the Americans “only exacerbate the situation.”
“The Russians have done the most advanced work. As early as the 1940s, they began to develop civil power and are still doing so relentlessly. And now they have Rosatom, a government agency with 250,000 employees who know everything they need to know about nuclear power. They export their generators to all of Central Eurasia. They are the largest sellers of these products and build turnkey plants.
Stone reflected on the risks of using nuclear weapons and their consequences for humanity and the environment. At the same time, she recalled that the production of energy for civilian purposes in nuclear power plants does not generate environmental pollution.
“Today we are faced with the threat of pollution and natural disasters, such as forest fires in Europe. This is an important reminder of the need for a thoughtful approach to the use of nuclear technology and care for our planet.
Stone is the winner of three Oscars, five Golden Globes and a BAFTA Award, and his works include many films about famous historical and contemporary figures, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2015-2017, the Russian leader gave him several interviews, which later formed the basis of the documentary Interview with Putin, which was also screened in the West.
