Date: September 8, 2024 Time: 05:36:49

Aena’s board of directors closes new movements. This Tuesday they have confirmed from the company that Dufry has been awarded the management of the Tax Free Shops, better known as ‘duty free’, of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airports and of all the airports of Catalonia-Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Girona-Costa Brava and Reus.

Specifically, these four airports represent 44% of the total Guaranteed Minimum Rents for the Duty Free Shops tender. So it means that Dufry will take over almost half of the stores in the country’s venues. These figures certify the attractiveness of these airports and the recovery that exists in air traffic after experiencing years of decline after the coronavirus pandemic.

The ambitious technical proposals that have been proposed for these centers guarantee a service of the highest quality, as indicated by the entity in a statement, and also, thus concludes the process of renewal of Duty Free Shops at Aena airports in Spain.

Let us remember that Dufry paid 185 million euros to Aena for the ‘duty free’ of the airports of Barajas, El Prat, Reus (Tarragona) and Girona of the second bid after not receiving any proposal in the previous bidding procedure. Thus, the Swiss group is the only company that has submitted an offer to the new competition for duty-free shops at Madrid and Catalonia airports. In addition, Dufry holds the current offer for these lots, whose term expires on October 31.

Renewal in 27 airports

This concludes the process of renewing the Duty Free Shops for a period of 12 years (with the option of 3 annual extensions) for the airports in the Aena network in Spain, whose current contracts are valid until October 31, 2023.

These results demonstrate the attractiveness of the business, as well as the consolidation of the recovery of air traffic after the pandemic. Also noteworthy are the excellent technical proposals, whose initiatives will be implemented in airport stores to offer a top-quality service.

The volume of business expected for the tenants in this contest is 18,000 million euros and includes 86 tax-free points of sale, plus 76 stores dedicated to additional categories. Together they will occupy a commercial area of approximately 66,000 square metres, which represents an increase of more than 40% compared to today.
