Eighteen reference centers have taken cancer diagnosis to a new level – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The main thing is not to be late.

A pediatric oncology and hematology center has been opened in the Republic of Bashkortostan. It housed oncology and hematology departments, with capacity for 30 patients each, and a day hospital, with 10 beds. There is also a molecular genetics laboratory, a radiological research department, bone marrow transplants and intensive care departments.

The new center in Ufa complements the number of modern facilities being created in the country to provide high-tech medical care to children. A comfortable center equipped with high-tech equipment will provide young patients from Bashkortostan, neighboring regions and even foreign countries with high-quality medical care.

The Center’s doctors were trained at the Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center for Pediatric Hematology and Immunology. Their specialists also provide telemedicine consultations in complex cases. On the basis of the institution, for the first time in the region they will be able to carry out in-depth diagnostics of various pathologies, perform unique neuro-oncological operations and bone marrow transplants.

The newspaper “Republic of Bashkortostan” reports: “Deputies of the republican parliament proposed changing the methodology for calculating the volume of financing for cancer diagnosis.” Currently, a one-size-fits-all approach is used that does not take into account the actual cancer situation in the regions. “As a result, some of them face a serious lack of funding. Thus, in Bashkiria, in 2023, the real need is seven thousand molecular genetic studies, but in reality only 3.8 thousand have been funded. A differentiated approach to meeting needs,” says Speaker of the State Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Konstantin Tolkachev.

As experts point out, molecular genetic research makes it possible to identify the genetic mutation that causes the development of oncology. The speed and accuracy with which a diagnosis is made directly determines the success of treatment, the length of hospitalization and the life expectancy of the child.

How Valera and Lika were saved

During his annual medical examination, Valera was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor, an extremely rare pathology. From the Luhansk region, where the boy lives, he and his father were taken to Moscow, to the Blokhin National Medical Research Center for Oncology.

Here, doctors provide organ-sparing treatment for pancreatic tumors in children. And it does not cause complications from the concomitant disease – diabetes. Valera underwent surgery and is now home.

Another unique operation was successfully carried out by Like from North Ossetia. For several years, the girl was tormented by a constant cough and difficulty breathing. Doctors made different diagnoses: from the effects of stress to bronchial asthma. Finally, the girl was diagnosed with mucoepidermoid bronchial cancer. Before Lika, children had never been given such a diagnosis; Her case was the first in the history of medicine.

A robot-assisted operation to remove a bronchial tumor was performed at the Blokhin Lika Oncology Center. Before her, such an operation had not been performed on any child in the world. Doctors managed to save the girl’s lung and completely remove the tumor.

science for kids

The National Medical Research Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology named after Dmitry Rogachev is a unique medical and research institution. Accepts for treatment children with all blood diseases, malignant tumors, hereditary syndromes, immunodeficiencies and other serious diseases.

The center’s specialists (with the support of the Science for Children Foundation) quickly diagnosed the boy Timofey from Krasnozamensk, Moscow Region, with myeloid leukemia. Previously it was not possible to identify it. The young patient received a bone marrow transplant from a donor.

Direct speech

Andrey Kaprin, independent chief oncologist of the Russian Ministry of Health:

– In the fight against cancer, comprehensive treatment is always used. Not only are genetics and cellular development important, but it was important to create a system that would allow the patient to get to the doctor quickly. In Russia, 18 reference centers for immunohistochemical, pathomorphological and radiological research methods have been created. They took the diagnosis of malignant tumors to a new level.
