Endesa promotes 1,000 MW wind projects in Galicia after the closure of As Pontes

Endesa already has authorization from the Government to close its thermal power plant in As Pontes (A Coruña), the largest in Spain and with 47 years of life, it will deploy a portfolio of wind projects of more than 1,000 MW, most of them linked to initiatives industries for the economic development of Galicia.

In a statement, the company recalls that it has carried out a campaign to attract investment in which it has obtained the involvement of the Chinese group Sentury Tire and Ence, which will install factories on company land in As Pontes. The company’s wind projects in Galicia “will be decisive in reactivating Alcoa’s industrial complex in A Mariña de Lugo,” he adds.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has given the green light this Saturday to the closure of this thermal power plant, presented by the company that owns it, Endesa, and after the favorable report from Red Eléctrica de España on the compatibility of said closure with safety supply of the electrical system.

The installation -explains the electricity company- had been left out of the market due to the constant increase in CO2 emission prices; At present, only one of the four groups that the plant that had been in service since 1976 has disappeared in operation.

This is the last Endesa coal plant to be ruled out of operation in the Iberian Peninsula and, in this way, “continues to make progress in meeting the decarbonization and energy transition objectives of its activity.”

In parallel, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to Galicia by promoting a social and economic development plan in the region, which includes a portfolio of wind projects with access and connection to the grid for a total of 1,000 MW (650 MW with already approved environmental impact statement), most of them linked to industrial initiatives for the future of Galicia, such as the reopening of the Alcoa plant in Lugo.
