Quinn Wilson, former creative director of Lizzo, has teamed up with Boardwalk Pictures to produce a documentary about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The picture will be called “King Pleasure” (“The pleasure of the king”). Reported deadline.
The tape will include unpublished images from the artist’s personal archive, access to which was provided by his relatives. Work on the project will begin in the summer of 2023. During it, the filmmakers will be able to see Basquiat’s original works, get acquainted with his notebooks, rare interviews and photographs.
“I was lucky enough to understand Jean-Michel better thanks to the stories and memories shared by his sisters and his stepmother. We uncovered a story that breaks what we know about this prolific artist,” Wilson said.
The documentary will be produced by Andrew Fried, Jordan Wynn, Dane Lillegard, Eileen Gallagher and Wilson. Jeanine Erivo, Lizan Basquiat, Anthony Koenigbagbe, Catherine Oliver, Lindsay Firestone, James Cunningham, and Amy Stewart will also star in the film.
“Jean-Michel understood that art lives beyond generations and that, after his death, his work will continue to reveal new semantic layers of our common human experience. With so many false descriptions and narratives surrounding our brother’s life, we are very happy to return to the legacy of Jean-Michel, whom we knew and loved very much,” said Lizan Basquiat and Jeanine Erivo.
Netflix previously released the trailer for the Deepest Breath documentary on freediving. The image was filmed by the film company A24. We talk about it in more detail here.
