The musicians of the group reported on the departure of the former partner on social networks, without specifying the reasons and details. Gary died at his California home in Stockton. He was 70 years old.

Harry Allan Robertson Young was born on May 3, 1953, in the 80s he played with local bands, with an emphasis on punk rock (for example, in The Fall of Christians). When songwriter/guitarist Stephen Malkmus and guitarist Scott Cannberg approached the Pavement project in 1989, Gary came third.

Young left the group due to a conflict with the rest of its members, mainly Malkmus. However, in 2010 he rejoined Pavement and played a few gigs.

Gary recorded three solo albums (the video for his Plan Man was included in the series on Beavis and Butt-Head), invented a universal microphone stand that he sold online, and became the subject of a biographical documentary.

Young was ranked number 42 on Stylus magazine’s list of the 50 Greatest Rock Drummers.
