The official tweeted (blocked in Russia) that Afghans would no longer be issued passports.
“Persons in respect of whom the relevant authorities have imposed a ban (to obtain a passport – ed.) due to non-performance of debt or other obligations,” Kani said.
Another category of Afghans who will not be issued a passport are “persons convicted by courts in criminal, civil and economic cases.”
At the same time, Kani did not explain whether the innovation would affect the current passports of criminals and debtors, or whether it was just a matter of not providing them with a new passport. Furthermore, the Taliban Interior Ministry spokesman did not clarify whether these categories of Afghans would be eligible for a passport if they paid off their debts or served their prison terms.
