The people managed to get out of the car on their own. After that, they waited for help on the ice, slowly freezing. They were attended by employees of the embassy unit of the Baikal search and rescue team, a group of rescuers who were on duty on the all-terrain vehicle “Trekol”.
The victims were found about 12 kilometers from the village of Dubinino. The woman was discovered first. She was alone and said that she and her roommates were separated. She saw two more people at the fishing stand.
As reported by the detachment’s press service, the search was greatly hampered by snowstorms and wind.
“We gave signals with flashlights from the roof of Trekol and the victims responded to us with flashlights,” remembers lifeguard third class Alexey Filonov.
The fishermen were warmed up in the car, given hot tea and then taken to their families. They feel well and have refused medical help.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations reminds that the ice on Lake Baikal remains dangerous. Its thickness is still irregular and it is prohibited to approach it.
