An unusual experiment, according to the official publication of the Cuban Communist Party Granma, was decided to be carried out in a rural school located in the eastern province of Pinar del Río, near the city of Briones Montoto.

The company has already accepted the first batch of quails. In total, according to the publication, the farm plans to house 120,000 birds, which will be able to produce 24.2 million eggs a year. Investments in the project amounted to about 26 million Cuban pesos (about 10 million rubles at the official exchange rate – approx. “RG”).

The issue of food security and national food production in Cuba is particularly acute today. The country is highly dependent on food imports, which, against the background of insufficient foreign exchange earnings for the budget, leads to a sharp deficit. In addition, Hurricane Ian, which hit Cuba last fall, destroyed more than 40 percent of the poultry farms in the Vueltabajo region, known primarily for its tobacco plantations.

But poultry farms were also located there, in connection with which resourceful Cubans decided to breed birds in abandoned schools, the buildings of which are mostly capital concrete structures, less susceptible to the elements.
