The Greek Civil Defense organized the evacuation of several villages as a precautionary measure. The roads were also blocked. According to the rescue service, 29 fire brigades participated in the operation, as well as five aircraft and a helicopter.
Two large fires that burned for days west of Athens and south of the Peloponnese were largely brought under control. They destroyed dozens of houses, razed thousands of hectares of forest, said Ioannis Artopios, a spokesman for the Greek fire service.
