New technologies come to the Lisbon metro thanks to the national company, Indra. The Spanish company lands again in Portugal in order to implement new access systems for the means of transport. Now it has provided the entity with a system that allows the traveler to access with their own mobile, bank card or smart watch known as ‘smartwatch’, after applying the universal payment technology EMV (Europay-Mastercard-Visa).
The new program allows the traveler to access without having to previously purchase a ticket or pass, although it maintains the rest of the travel modalities that previously existed, as the company explained in a statement on Tuesday.
The company, which has developed the project in collaboration with Metro de Lisboa and Visa, has updated the access control mechanism with new readers, has renewed the ticket sales program, has installed the EMV “backoffice” and has integrated the new ecosystem with the financial payment gateway that allows collections.
With the new solution, the user only has to swipe their card or mobile when entering and leaving the station, while the program automatically calculates the fare based on the route they have taken.
Indra has indicated that in this way the prepaid model is “exceeded” and a “much more modern and efficient” postpaid model is passed, based on account management integrated into the financial ecosystem. The company anticipates that the volume of cash transactions will thus be reduced, operating costs saved and the consumption of plastics and paper reduced to a minimum.
