According to the department, the militants planned to simultaneously detonate three dozen bombs in densely populated areas of the Iranian capital. Intelligence services discovered that the terrorists were planning to carry out their plan on the anniversary of last year’s riots in the republic.
During the investigation, police detained 28 people in Tehran, as well as in the provinces of Alborz and West Azerbaijan. During the searches, law enforcement officers found firearms and explosives on the suspects. According to preliminary data, the detainees could be related to the terrorist group IS (Islamic State, banned in the Russian Federation).
Earlier, ten IS militants were detained in the Turkish province of Izmir as part of an anti-terrorist operation. According to the Minister of the Interior of the Republic, Ali Yerlikai, terrorist attacks with explosives were being prepared.
